February 2025 hobby update

Well February has come and gone.  Apart from a week where I'd picked up a nasty cold (from having to sit with daft people at work that shouldn't have been in), it's been quite a good month with more hobby progress.

Completed

I've completed:

  • A trio of Victrix Ancient Germans that I did as generic Dark Age warriors.  More of these here.
  • Seven 20mm Second World War Red Army Assault Engineers.  These were really great Sgt.Major Miniatures figures that I completed quite quickly
  • Four 20mm Second World War German Grenadiers.  More Sgt.Major Miniatures sculpts you can see more of these and the Red Army here.  That's all my 20mm completed.
  • Two 28mm Burrows & Badgers squirrels.  A lovely pair of miniatures, you can see more of them here.

As I did in January, once I'd completed some figures I turned to terrain:
  • I completed a couple of wooded areas for smaller scale games.  I'll post a step by step guide for these next month.

In progress

On the table as we end February are:

  • Six 28mm Victrix Unarmoured Rus.  These are well on the way and should be finished early in March.
  • Six 28mm Victrix Armoured Rus.  I've only just started on these but I'm aiming to get them finished next month as well.
  • A 15mm Hetzer that's still sitting there.  I need to find a suitable colour scheme and get my finger out and paint this.
  • 10mm French and Indian Wars.  I was sent a few samples from Pendraken and I started painting them up as a test and then lost interest.  I'm not sure I'll continue with them, not because they're bad or anything (far from it) just because I don't have a use for them.

Gaming

I played a couple of games in February making the most of having my urban ruins down from the loft:
  • First of all I returned to one of my old favourites, Ambush Alley.   This game was set during the final stages of the siege of Budapest in February 1945.  You can read the AAR here.
  • For my second game I used Space Weirdos, which is another firm favourite of mine.  This was set in my fictional setting of the neo-Soviet post-apocalyptic city of Grozniansk.  Another very enjoyable game, you can read the AAR here

Ramblings, Reading & Research

I only read one hobby related book this month but it was a corker:

  • "The War of the Austrian Succession" by Reed Browning.  This was a superb book, which completely gripped me.  I knew very little about this conflict apart from it's relevance to the Seven Years War and it being the conflict where Frederick II of Prussia cut his teeth.  There's succinct coverage of the battles which as a wargamer leaves you wanting to know more.  The political machinations of all the countries is covered in depth and it's absolutely fascinating.  "Keep your enemies close but your friends closer".

Incoming and Outgoings

I've not bought anything this month.  I did order an Osprey Men-at-Arms then I checked my collection and realised that I already owned it!  Hinds Ltd (the company involved)  were very gracious and I managed to cancel the order and was refunded.  I've looked at a lot of things as I search for what might be next, but I'm quite happy whittling away at what I've got.

On the other side I'm whittling away bits that are no longer required and I've brought some funds in by selling:
  • The last dozen painted 28mm Wargames Atlantic First World War Germans.  These have been sitting around for ages.  I got to really dislike these figures as they reminded me of a rare time where I felt disappointed with the hobby.  The paint jobs were quite good, but it's hard to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
  • My copy of Warmaster Medieval Armies.  This is a period I'm not that interested in and there's very little chance of me ever building big enough armies for Warmaster.  I got a good price for it so silly to have it sitting gathering dust.
  • A 1/72nd Hind helicopter model.  This was never going to get used in any games and I was pleasantly surprised by what I sold this for.
  • 1/6th Dragon Action Figure.  I've been trimming down my collection of Second World War action figures and I sold another one that was surplus to requirements.  All in all I've made a tidy sum that'll be reinvested into hobby kit.

  1. Thanks Ray, it's nothing like what you're producing with your fantastic 1812 project though!
