May 2024 hobby update

Bloody hell where is this year going?  It's a sign of getting old isn't it, the months whizzing by?  I started the month feeling like death (there's an irony here when you look at one of my rule purchases) and it turned out I'd got a dose of Covid.  Strangely although I had no energy for things like exercise, after the initial couple of days I found I could paint and I used the extra time not doing other things to press on and get stuff done.  It's been a milestone month in that I have now finished over 50% of the 28mm figures I started the year with which is great for morale.  I'm also back in the swing of posting more regularly with five posts added to the blog this month.   Completed I completed all the 28mm minis that were in progress as we ended April: Two more late-Roman spearmen and staff slinger and archer leaders (more  here ).  Finishing these enabled me to get this collection onto the table for it's inaugural battle (see below).   It's been a

Space Weirdos AAR

Image
Background On the desert planet of Ilmoral the fanatical warriors of Bigkhardon face off against the soldiers of Corne.  Who will triumph in this Space Weirdos battle? The forces The Bigkhardons led by The Bitcher. The Corne led by Norgal the Naughtiest. The full stats for both forces can be found  here .   Set up I played the Kill 'em all scenario from the rules on a 2ft x 2ft board, standard size for a 75 points game of Space Weirdos.  The board was filled with rocky outcrops and cover. Initial set up with the Bigkhardons at the top Round One  The Bigkhardons win the Initiative roll and The Bitcher himself takes the lead.  He uses 2 actions to Move and then Shoots  his heavy pistol at Dim Viesel but misses.  Dim Viesel uses one action to Aim and then Shoots at The Bitcher, but neither of Dim’s shots hit. The Bighardons spend a Command Point and Hustle Vilya Puilmiof forward so she Moves 3 sticks.   Elton Assley Moves forward 1 stick for the Corne.  He can just about see The Bitch

Verrotwood creatures

It's been four months since I last worked on my Verrotwood project, but I've made up for it lately.  This month I've built another cult ( here ) and knocked out a trio of creatures.  The Greater Reanimated (undead) was a  simple kit bash.  The body is an Oathmark Elf with the arms and head from a Frostgrave Cultists sprue (the bits from my one sprue have gone a long way)!   The Madman was even simpler.  He's a Mantic Games Ghoul, with a Victrix Viking head.  I've had a couple of these ghouls lying about for over 12 years so it was good to use one.  The Victrix head is beautifully sculpted/rendered and with the massive beard works very well for a forest dwelling nutter.   The final figure is Baba Yaga, a 3d printed miniature from Clay Cyanide I got off eBay the other year.  It's a superbly detailed miniature but I went very minimalist with the painting.  I wanted to use this figure as a ghost or apparition, so I just painted her Citadel Wraithbone white, drybrush

Verrotwood - The Uncoiling of Beiysss

Image
I recently finished off my second cult for Verrotwood - they are The Uncoiling of Beiysss. These were very simple kit bashes.  The bodies all came from the Frostgrave Male Wizards from NorthStar.  I'd got a frame of these free when I pre-ordered a certain weird First World War rule set last year.  The arms are all from the Frostgrave Cultists set that I had lying about from years ago, when I'd made a group of Old West cultists using arms from Great Escape Cowboys. The spear wielder has Wizards arms with Cultists hands and spear grafted on. The Uncoiling are the faithful who worship the Great Serpent Beiysss.  They believe that by following this entity they will gain power over the other Cults and be embraced into his coils in eternal life. The cult favour edged weapons dripping with serpent poison.  They prefer to close with their enemies but concede that they need some ranged capability hence the crossbow equipped cultist. As with the Wisentii  I used large 30mm bases to have

More 28mm Victrix late-Romans

Image
As I assembled the forces for my first game using the late-Roman and Germanics that I've been working on for the last few months, I realised I needed a few more figures to make up the units.  I needed an extra pedes for each infantry unit and a leader for the missile troops.  I didn't have any more specific late-Romans left so I rooted through my other Victrix sprues. The bodies for the two spearmen came from a sprue I had from the Victrix Ancient Germans set.  Belt details aside, there's very little difference between the clothing across much of the ranges.  The hands holding the spear come from the Unarmoured Late-Romans set as do the heads.  I've got so many spare heads from that one pack I could outfit whole legions!  The shields are also from that set finished with Little Big Man transfers. I'm using Warlords of Erehwon to play with and each unit is usually a minimum of four strong with a leader figure.  I had four staff slingers and four archers but no leaders
