2026 gaming Ovelist
Once again I've split my Ovelists into gaming and doing (here). Here's the 2026 gaming plan:
And as in 2025 I've gone for periods rather than specific rules.
Fantasy - I didn't play any games using Fantasy figures last year. I lost all interest in the genre and mused about selling my Warmaster armies, having little interest in the GW world. Sword Weirdos, Warlords of Eherwon and Midgard will be the rulesets I'd use, dependant on the size of game for this genre.
Verrotwood - I'll be continuing The Awakening Campaign for it's third year. I never lose interest in this!
Sci-Fi/Post-Apoc - I played a couple of neo-Sov post-apocalypse games last year using Space Weirdos. Much as I like that game I'm thinking of using What a Cowboy/Cartel going forward as I can then run the games as a campaign. I still want to give the Last Days zombie rules that I've owned for years a go.
Ancients & Medieval - This covers my Punic Wars, Early Imperial Rome, late-Rome and Norse Age collections. I had a good game of Midgard last year with the Early Imperial Rome forces and a dull game of Ravenfeast with the Norse collection and that put me right off the genre. I've still not played Ragnarok, which was why I collected Victrix Norse Age (even though I had Gripping Beast ones!) and that's another collection that may be sold off, as I really don't see myself assembling more plastics anytime soon.
16th Century - my 15mm late 16th Century/Elizabethan collection is one of my favourites, I just never use it! I'll look to rectify that this year.
18th Century - I try to get at least one Seven Years War game in a year. I've got some more figures to work on and will aim to play later in in 2026. I'd also like to give my small collection of French-Indian Wars am outing, probably using Songs of Drums and Tomahawks.19th Century - I have brigade sized forces for the First Anglo- Sikh War and Franco-Prussian War. I didn't play with either in 2025 and really wanted to. I'll use the They Died for Glory specific rules for the FPW. I played a test game of The Men Who Would Be Kings in 2025 and will try this for the First Anglo-Sikh War and also with my French Colonial collection.
Old West - I played my first game of What a Cowboy last year and loved it, so more Old West is on the agenda. I also have Verrotwood the Old West and Dracula's America which I've never played.
Second World War - The rabbit hole. With platoon and small company sized forces across 15, 20 and 28mm scales for Western Desert, Mediterranean, early and late Eastern Front (both Summer and Winter), winter Northwest Europe, the Pacific and the Far-East, it's difficult to know where to start! I've been using Battlegroup, but picked up Chain of Command2 and I Ain't Been Shot Mum and want to start using them.
Wars of Decolonization - it's been two years since I played a game set in either First Indo-China War and Algerian War. Being one of my core periods I'm keen to get back to it. I think Chain of Command would work very well so that's the logical step.
1980's "Moderns" - Having spent much of my 2025 hobby time working on forces for The Iran-Iraq War, it'd be daft not to get them onto tbe table. I'm not sure of rules yet.
There we go, more than enough to be getting on with. I bought less rules last year and am looking to rationalise this further in 2026. My target is to play 20 games, two more than last year.
